How were the data and visualization produced ?
The basemap for this visual was created by aggregating multiple sources and making them compatible using geomatics methods.
Data originates from the Navigocorpus database, which among other data comprises the clearance documents issued to ships on departure. These data were re-processed in an API. The database structure is based on point calls, which indicate a location where, on a given date, a ship in motion was observed. A filter was used to select the point calls where ships were observed immediately after leaving the port.
How to read the visualization?
The dot size is proportional to the number of departures recorded in each port of the region studied. Each of the three colors shows the province to which a port belongs.
