Navigation data was drawn from the Navigocorpus database and for this investigation more particularly from:

  • Clearances from the G5 sub-series kept at the Archives Nationales de France.
  • Clearances of Lorient, Archives départementales du Morbihan (Lorient), 10B-19.
  • Clearances of Saint-Tropez, Archives départementales du Var (Draguignan), 7 B 10.
  • Records of the Marseille Health Office, Archives départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône (Marseille), 200 E 543 and 545.

Additional data relating to slave shipments were provided by the database https://www.slavevoyages.org/voyage/database

Data on foreign trade were provided by the Toflit18 database (see http://toflit18.medialab.sciences-po.fr/#/exploration/sources), and for this investigation more particularly from:

Archives nationales d’Outre-Mer (ANOM) (Aix-en-Provence), for 1789: Col. F2 B 14 (also available in AN Marine B 7 514).

Archives nationales de France, for 1789: AN F12 1665 and 1666 AN Marine B 7 514 (also available in ANOM Col F2 B 14).

Archives départementales de Charente-Maritime (La Rochelle): 41 FTE 270 (for the history of La Rochelle exports).

Bibliothèque Municipale de Saint-Brieuc: Gournay Archives, M84–87 (for 1750).

Most of the grievance registers studied were provided by the Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime (AD17) as the Archives départementales de Vendée (AD85) only hold a few registers for the coastal region of Poitou (Bouin, Noirmoutier, and the island of Elle in the Poitevin marsh). Collection and transcription when necessary were carried out in two ways. We first retrieved a set of Charentais registers transcribed on the website Histoire Passion - Saintonge Aunis Angoumois. AD17 and AD85 provided additional data for this corpus: these registers were retrieved and transcribed by Thierry Sauzeau and Silvia Marzagalli, and they served to assess the comprehensiveness and content of the sample used. The corpus of 163 registers includes 14 parish registers and an additional 5 coastal district registers (groups of parishes). The entire process of data preparation and consolidation is available here.

The records of the deliberations of the Chamber of Commerce of La Rochelle are archived at the Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime, 41 FTE 8 (available online: https://archinoe.fr/v2/ad17/visualiseur/ir\_ead\_visu\_lien.html?ir=11431&id=490014227 )
